Surgical robotic and navigation systems have revolutionized surgical procedures over several decades. While early adoption was slow and met with some resistance, the tide has now turned; these technologies are gaining widespread adoption. The influx of numerous competitors and the growing installed base are clear signs this market is making waves in the healthcare industry. Moreover, the continuous evolution of technology and digitalization, particularly with the rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence, necessitates continuous upgrades in this field.
With this, the global surgical navigation and robotic system market, valued at close to $12.7 billion in 2024, is poised to increase over the forecast period at a CAGR of 15.7% to reach more than $33 billion. The North American region represented the largest market, followed by Asia-Pacific and Western Europe. All regions are expected to increase at a double-digit growth rate. Comparing the three largest market regions, Western Europe is set to experience the most rapid growth followed by Asia-Pacific and then North America.
In the surgical robotics market, the robotic system segment includes minimally invasive surgery (MIS) robotic systems, robotic-assisted systems for orthopedic, spine, and neurosurgery, as well as radiosurgery and vascular catheter placement robotic systems. In 2024, the MIS robotic system market represented the largest market segment, owing to the growth and expansion of da Vinci robotic system. The first version of the da Vinci surgical system was launched in Europe in January 1999, while it obtained U.S. FDA approval in 2000. Among all segments, the orthopedic surgical robotics segment is anticipated to have the highest growth rate over the forecast period. This is attributed to the growing volume of orthopedic procedures in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. Furthermore, manufacturers’ marketing efforts and strategies, which often include flexible financing options to address capital budget limitations, have significantly contributed to this growth.
In 2023, China launched a campaign against healthcare corruption. As a result, some hospitals decided to cancel or delay their purchase orders. The campaign has prompted them to enhance their internal policies, tenders, and procurement process. This led to a decline in capital unit sales for some manufacturers of surgical robotics and navigation systems. However, this campaign is set to drive growth for companies offering more cost-effective surgical robotic systems. Moreover, it is expected that this will reshape the competition dynamics, potentially favoring local manufacturers that can offer more affordable solutions and thus gain market share.
The growing adoption of surgical navigation and robotics systems in hospitals, particularly in outpatient settings, ambulatory surgery centers, and other healthcare facilities, is one of the major drivers of market growth. Furthermore, this growth is fueled by the increasing number of procedures bolstered by the rising number of qualified surgeons capable of performing robotic-assisted surgeries in a few regions. However, this growth is tempered by several market barriers, such as the high cost of capital equipment and insurance coverage limitations. While some healthcare insurance plans cover robotic-assisted surgeries, others have cost-related restrictions. Furthermore, certain insurance companies require that the surgeon be a partner or an approved provider within their network.
Another major market barrier in the surgical robotics market is the cost of the surgical navigation and robotics system itself. Generally, navigation systems are less expensive compared with robotic systems, with a range of $100,000 to $400,000, while robotic systems range from approximately $300,000 to $4,000,000. Moreover, the additional annual fee for service and maintenance is also another cost that has to be considered. To mitigate the challenge of capital budget constraints, some companies are offering their systems through flexible financial arrangements, such as fixed annual payment leases or per-case fee structures. Some systems, particularly in the orthopedic and spine market segments, are placed under earnout financial models or offered for free or at a significant discount in exchange for the use of specific implant brands or a minimum purchase of related products such as disposables and other accessories. This kind of arrangement is significantly beneficial for healthcare facilities that recognize the clinical and financial advantages of surgical navigation and robotics systems but have limited capital investment budgets.
Globally, Intuitive Surgical continued to dominate the MIS robotic system market in 2024. Intuitive Surgical strengthened its dominance in the market as it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its da Vinci 5 in March 2024. Competition in this market segment is expected to further intensify over the forecast period, with a number of companies awaiting approval, and recently obtaining approval from authoritative bodies and those currently involved in research and development activities.
Competitors such as CMR Surgical with its Versius and Medtronic with its Hugo have been gradually acquiring market share in Europe. Versius received CE mark approval in 2019, and in 2024, CMR obtained market authorization in the U.S. through the FDA De Novo application process. Meanwhile, Medtronic’s Hugo, which is currently available in Europe and other countries, was recently submitted for FDA approval for urology indications in the U.S. Both CMR and Medtronic continue to expand their presence across the Asia-Pacific region and other global markets.
Stryker is another competitor in the surgical robotics market, specifically in the field of orthopedics with its orthopedic surgical robot, Mako. Stryker also offers its navigation systems, Stryker NAV3i and NavSuite3, allowing the company to be present in two competing technologies. Stryker continues to innovate and part of it is the integration of artificial intelligence. In July 2024, Stryker received its FDA clearance for its Q guidance system with Spine Guidance 5 software that features Copilot. This feature provides feedback modalities for supporting bone resection, pedicle preparation, and screw delivery.
Another competitor in the orthopedics market is Smith & Nephew with its CORI, an improved, next-generation robot based on NAVIO’s technology. In 2023 and 2024, Smith & Nephew has been enhancing and upgrading its CORI, which includes the launch of Personalized Planning and RI. Insights data visualization software for the capability expansion of CORI, and also CORIOGRAPH◊ pre-operative planning and modeling services.
In 2024, Zimmer Biomet was a major competitor in the robotic-assisted neurosurgery system and spine system markets with its ROSA. All ROSA systems are assembled and tested in the south of France. Zimmer Biomet has been continuously expanding its portfolio in the surgical robotics market. After launching its ROSA Knee System and ROSA Hip System, in 2024, Zimmer Biomet received its U.S. FDA clearance for its ROSA Shoulder System. Furthermore, in June 2024, Zimmer Biomet entered a distribution agreement with THINK Surgical to offer TMINI Miniature Handheld Robotic System for knee procedures, specifically in total knee arthroplasty.
Another competitor in the robotic-assisted spine market is Globus Medical. Globus Medical is actively marketing its ExcelsiusGPS robotic guidance and navigation system, which is designed to be used during orthopedic and neurosurgical spine procedures. Following the completion of its merger with NuVasive in 2023, Globus Medical emerged as a competitor in the surgical navigation market. Additionally, the company expanded its product portfolio with FDA approval for its ExcelsiusFlex orthopedics robot.
The overall surgical navigation and robotics market features several competitors like Brainlab, Accuray, Johnson & Johnson, CUREXO, Synaptive Medical, Stereotaxis, Siemens Healthineers, Clearpoint Neuro, Integra Lifesciences, Orthofix-Seaspine, OrthAlign, and more, with a growing number of emerging companies in each market segment especially in the MIS surgical robotics market. As adoption increases in healthcare settings, together with the push for digitalization and integration of artificial intelligence, more companies are expected to enter the market, leading to shifts in competitive dynamics.
The surgical navigation and robotics market has experienced significant growth and transformation, driven by factors such as the increasing number of procedures, advancements in AI and digitalization, evolving surgical solutions, flexible financial arrangements, and rising adoption in healthcare.
